Common Sense Media Age: 16+ Violence 5/5 Language 4/5

My Age Recommendation: 15+ (Due to strong bloody violence, disturbing images, and infrequent but strong language).

Ever since this movie came out in 2019, I have always wanted to watch it, but I never got the chance. The trailer and the concept of an underground society that has a negative clone of yourself really intrigued me, so when this movie aired on TV a week ago, I knew it was time to watch it! Us tells the story of Adelaide, who when she was a child wandered off into a hall of mirrors at a boardwalk in Santa Cruz and was face to face with a doppelganger of herself. She now has a family and they traveled to their beach home in Santa Cruz. After seeing coincidences that relate to her horrific childhood, she wanted to leave. That is until one night, a family appears in their driveway. The family breaks into the house and they are all doppelgangers of each member in the family. Each family member must now try and kill their evil clones before they catch up to them. As the family tries to kill them, they start to learn more about these doppelgangers, and that some things are not as they seem! Will the family survive? Let me say, this was an amazing, clever, and smart horror movie. The characters were developed with amazing actors who all potrayed their fictional characters well. Adelaide's actor, Lupita Nyong'o, won many awards for her performance as Adelaide and Red (the doppelganger for Adelaide). The plot was amazing and interesting, and there was never a dull moment. The movie delivered scares effectively throughout the movie, unlike many horror movies that save the scares for the last 30 minutes or so. The plot twist at the end made the movie even scarier, as the viewers are left with a sense of confusion since they don't know who they were really rooting for (I won't spoil the plot twist). My only complaint, and this might be just me, is that the ending was really abrupt. I get that Jordan Peele (the director and writer) wanted to leave on a cliffhanger, but it felt like the movie should have been a little bit longer to explain a few more things before ending it suddenly. I feel like doing that could have added more symbolism (which is a main theme of the movie) and really tie the movie together. Overall, this is an amazing movie for those looking for a scare and also for clever dialogue and plot twists as well.
