Common Sense Media Age: 12+ Violence 4/5 Language 3/5
My Age Recommendation: 12+ (Due to strong sequences of sci-fi action/violence and destruction and brief strong language)
My brother and I were hyped for this movie ever since the first few trailers were released. As someone who is a fan of the Black Adam comics, I was extremely happy that Black Adam was getting its own movie with its own backstory and hopefully a bigger place in the DCEU. Some of those things happened, but some did not. The story follows the city of Khandaq, now overrun with foreign terrorists and government invasions. It was not always like this, and a man named Teth Adam was given the power of the gods over 5000 years ago to protect Khandaq from harm. When he misused his powers, he got it revoked, becoming Black Adam and being imprisoned in a deep sleep for 5000 years. When a treasure search went wrong, Teth Adam was awakened from his slumber only to find his city in shambles and under terrorist control. To make matters worse, a secret from his past is causing him to be hunted by The League of Justice to prevent him from misusing his power. Can he save Khandaq and end The League of Justice? Let me say, this movie had some great moments. The character development, mainly through flashbacks and dialogue, was great for Black Adam and the main characters. Most of the villains and The League of Justice had okay character development, but there were a lot of confusing moments where only comic fans who knew this characters would understand certain scenes. I believe a movie must provide development for these characters, even if there is a comic with all of this already provided because not everyone (unfortunately) reads comics. Another complaint is the use of two main conflicts. I won't say the conflicts due to this being a spoiler-free review, but I can safely say that the two conflicts were independent from each other, and each one took half the movie. The first half seemed fun to watch in terms of visuals and all the action, but the story was lacking. The second half really stepped it up with the story and the incredible visuals, and that kind of saved it from being a lower review. Overall, this was a decent anti-hero movie with questionable character development but great action sequences and VFX.
