Companion ★★★★☆

I was extremely hyped for this film for months now after seeing a few trailers for this since it was intriguing and pretty low in revealing too much story, which I liked since I only gathered a horror vibe from the initial trailers. The story follows a couple, Iris and Josh, who go on a trip to Joshs friend's lake house. Once there, Iris is on edge since she thinks a couple of Josh's friends don't like her, and things don't help when an unexpected event forces people to reveal a secret that changes the course of the entire night. That's all I'll really say to prevent spoilers, and I do want to mention that the media team for the film did great with the first round of trailers, and then revealed way to much in the trailers that came out to promote the movie once it was in theaters. I unfortunately saw one of these second round trailers and I believe it showed me way too much and it allowed me to know more of the plot that I was trying to keep 'mysterious' for me. There are plot twists throughout the film, and I think going in blind for the film would have increased the shock factor by a lot. I did not grade the movie based on this however, and I still was able to say this film was truly great. The main thing that stood out to me was the cinematography, as they used the setting of the beautiful lake house to their advantage during the fight scenes or establishing shots, something that doesn't always happen in films like this. I am glad the writing and overal premise of the film was original, and nothing felt cliche or copied from other horror films. The character development was a little rushed in the beginning, as one of the first twists does rush things just a bit, however it smoothed out significantly after this which helped the final payoff a lot. I loved the horror plot in this film, as it served some comedic moments but also some truly gruesome scenes that were fun to see. The acting from Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid far surpassed everyone else, and it really sold both of their strange characters, which helped make the story funny and super unnerving at times. There's a common theme of humanity that is explored throughout the entire film, and this is done perfectly so that the final payoff reflects this theme really well, something I don't see from horror films so I am glad a message was incorporated. Overall, this was a super solid horror film with a fresh story and great acting, and expect to laugh and be scared (but please go in as blind as possible).
