I really wanted to like this movie as a huge fan of this franchise. Whenever people disagree with reviews on kids movies, I always use the Despicable Me movies to demonstrate good children's movies with both humor and great story lines. I do agree with the fact that this franchise is amazing and has so far never failed to deliver laughs with compelling characters that make the movies enjoyable to watch for everyone. However, this film decided to throw that all out and deliver a few good laughs for the 90 minute duration, which made it entertaining as a Despicable Me fan for sure, but I was disappointed with everything else. The story follows Gru and his family which has a new member, a baby named Gru jr, who torments Gru and favors the other members. The happy family is disturbed when an old high school nemesis named Maxime Le Mal breaks out of prison and vows to destroy Gru's family. I will say, the story and new characters in this movie are really weak compared to the previous ones. Usually each villain had their 'thing' and made each movie a high-stakes adventure, but this one seemed really lazy. Maxime Le Mal brought zero importance or thrill to the movie and I'd argue the fight sequence with the crazy grandma lady was much more entertaining and on-brand than the lame cockroach villain. The previous films had a sense of danger during the climax of the movie (whether it was the kids were taken hostage or Gru losing his chance to be a top supervillain), and this movie poorly scrapped together a sequence of the baby being taken away for maybe two minutes tops. While this franchise is definitely one of my favorites, not just for kids movies, but movies in general, I am sad to say that the franchise is definitely being dragged out at this point. While this movie had many funny moments which is always entertaining, the story was lost with superficial villains and unnecessary new characters. Overall, fans of the franchise will enjoy the humor but be prepared for a weaker entry in the franchise.
