Eternals ★★☆☆☆

January 16th, 2021

Common Sense Media Age: 14+ Violence 4/5 Language 3/5

Sex 3/5

My Age Recommendation: 13+ (Due to strong violence with some blood, some language, partial nudity, and a brief sex scene).

I wanted to watch Eternals ever since it came out months ago, specifically because of the controversy about how good the movie was. Similar to the Matrix Resurrections, some people argued that this is a new era in the MCU and that this movie is setting the stage for greater movies featuring the Eternals. Others argue that Marvel is out of their mind for making this movie less 'heroic' and more forced dialogue and even Marvel's first on-screen sex scene! I would say that I agree with those who are not a fan of this movie. The movie follows a group of people known as the Eternals, who were sent to Earth millions of years ago to kill Deviants. When Deviants die, human life could expand with the help of the Eternals who always kept the human race safe. After all Deviants were wiped, they all went their separate ways. Almost 5 centuries later, they must reunite after reports of a new, smarter, and regenerative Deviant was spotted in London. As they venture off and try to come together, they learn dark truths about each other, and that not everyone can be trusted. Can they destroy this Deviant and whatever else it is planning? Or will the Deviant go through with its' plan to destroy man-kind? Let me say, this is by far the worst Marvel movie I have ever seen. The movie felt incredibly prolonged. So much so that I even paused it when I thought the movie was near its' end only to learn there was still another hour and a half left! The 'funny moments' in this movie felt very forced, and it was not natural by the characters at all. Even though this movie was a horrendous 2 and a half hours long, the Eternals themselves were still not developed properly at all! Many moments in the movie had the Eternals piling information about their background and origin and whatnot for more than 10 minutes to the point where it was incredibly confusing. There was also numerous scenes where the characters would be talking for more than 15 minutes on end, and those characters were not even talking about things that would develop the other characters! They were literally talking about random events that happened in the past that were never shown or referenced so the audience had no idea what they were talking about! Like come on! If you are going to make characters talk for the majority of the movie, don't make it feel like the characters are having an inside conversation that the audience cannot relate to! The only thing keeping me from giving this movie a 1 star is the fact that there was a diverse cast and that the graphics (as always with Marvel) were absolutely stunning. Overall, this is a horrible movie (never thought I'd be saying that about a Marvel movie) that should not have been made.
