Common Sense Media Age: 17+ Violence 5/5 Language 4/5
My Age Recommendation: 16+ (Due to strong language and strong bloody/gory violence throughout including graphic and disturbing imagery).
When I first saw the trailers for this movie, I was a little scared due to the one 'cheese grater' scene and I remember being reluctant to watch this movie. When it came out on home streaming, I decided to watch it at night, and it wasn't that bad. The story follows a family living in an old apartment building that will be condemned soon, and Ellie's (the mother) sister came to visit with news to share. Before she can say anything, a horrible earthquake occurs while the children are outside getting food, and one of the kids finds a hidden underground room after the earthquake is over. In this room, a coffin and a disturbing book is found along with a few records. After opening the book and seeing disturbing images, the kid plays the records which unleashes an invisible force that takes the body of their mother Ellie. They now have to fight to survive as their possessed mother brutally tries to kill all of them. Can they survive this evil force? Let me say, this movie wasn't bad. The story was okay and same goes for the execution, but I really liked the characters and the character development throughout the movie. The dialogue was okay for a horror movie but let's talk about the kills. The kills were some of the most creative and violent I have ever seen. There were chainsaws, cheese graters, stove tops, guns, and teeth used throughout this movie and each one got progressively worse! This movie did a good job with keeping a creepy and unsettling atmosphere, and the run-down apartment setting helped with this immensely. Overall, this is a great scary movie with an okay plot but great kills!
