Common Sense Media Age: 17+ Violence 4/5 Language 4/5 Sex 5/5 Drinking 3/5

My Age Recommendation: 16+ (Due to strong language throughout, disturbing imagery, alcohol abuse, prolonged non-sexual nudity, and brief graphic violence).

After seeing they added a lot of A24 films to HBO Max, I decided to watch one I've heard of for a while now. With A.I. being used a lot in our lives these days, this was hard to watch since I feel like this could happen if they ever developed A.I. robots that keep growing. The story follows a man who wins a contest and his prize includes him staying at an eccentric man's research facility/home and study his creations. The scientist created a fully functioning A.I. robot named Ava who acts like a human and has normal interactions with the winner staying in the house. As Ava says increasingly disturbing things, the man realizes that he didn't really win such a fun week with the scientist, and he has a lot to uncover in his one week with him! I was extremely shocked at how disturbing this movie was. The entire premise is incredibly realistic and so were the deadly consequences shown in this film. The story itself was great and had a decent pacing to it that kept you on edge the entire time. The sound design stuck out to me since it was really dynamic and even strange at times, but it always seemed to overload your senses to the point where the visuals on the screen became more disturbing due to the sounds you were hearing. Speaking of visuals, the CGI on the robots were amazing and the visuals surrounding the house/facility itself were also really impressive and gorgeous. The actors also had great chemistry which helped create suspense and a distrustful atmosphere. Overall, this movie is easily one of my favorites, and everyone should watch it (even if it might be a glimpse into our future)!
