Heretic ★★★★☆

I was super excited to see this film after numerous trailers since I love A24 and most of the horror that they do. This movie as usual did not disapoint, and it was a fresh and original take on religious horror. The story follows two missionaries who go door to door and enlighten people on Mormonism. When they reach an old man's house, they are entertained and allowed inside his house for further discussion of their faith. What seems to be a normal conversation gets increasingly strange as the man challenges their faith as a theologist, and by the time and they notice something is wrong it is too late. Being trapped in the house, the man set up a series of events to challenge their faith and ultimately reveal the 'one true god', and the two sisters must follow along for a chance at survival. I was extremely entertained and impressed throughout this movie for a number of reasons. For starters, it was original and refreshing including most of the religious discussions held throughout the movie. The logic the man used to debate pretty much all religions was clever and all conversations with him felt natural and witty. That being said, Hugh Grant is the greatest part about this film. The way he plays the character extremely well helps sell his unnerving and disturbing characteristics, and it made the tense moments throughout the movie much more stressful. Another thing I loved, and is usual for A24, but the camera work was absolutely gorgeous, especially during the beginning. I love how these movies have great settings with great camera work because it helps sell the film much more, and I wish more movies did this. I had a small complaint, and that was during the second theological discussion pertaining to Monopoly (I won't go into detail due to spoilers), in which half of the scene felt uncessary to me. I liked the discussion and the clever point being made, but the conversation felt like it dragged for a bit too long and the point became repetitive. However, Hugh Grant's acting as Mr. Reed helped me stay invested during this scene instead of utterly bored, which I will give him the credit for this. Overall, I think this is a refreshing horror film that will leave you questioning from start to finish!
