Common Sense Media Age: 15+ Violence 4/5 Language 3/5
My Age Recommendation: 14+ (Due to frequent disturbing imagery, brief strong language, and thematic sequences).
When I opened up the Max app for the first time, the new customized recommendations showed me that since I watched Sinister, I should watch this movie. I have heard of this one recently since the new movie Insidious: The Red Door came out today, so I decided to give this movie a shot! The story follows a family as they move into a new house. Almost immediately, they start to see weird things such as books falling on their own and doors opening and closing on their own. Soon this escalates to disturbing creatures appearing, and the family soon moves into another house. The same thing happens in the new house, and the oldest son Dalton falls into a coma after seeing something in the attic. They contact a medium who explains the danger of their situation, and that one of the family members will have to make a trip to another dimension known as The Further to find their son's spirit and bring it back in order to save him before its too late! Let me say, this movie had its scary moments. There were a couple jump scares that are regarded as the 'most effective jump scares of all time' next to the one in Sinister, and those definitely delivered. I also liked how the movie did not rely on these cheap scares to scare the audience, rather they use a horrifying soundtrack and disturbing imagery to create a sense of dread and tension throughout. That being said, the story was great, but the execution was lacking a little bit. The beginning was very dragged out with minimal scares to keep the audience interested, but at the halfway point it did pick up and then continued steadily all the way to the end. The character development was good for all the characters except for Elise, but this makes sense since she gets her own movies with Insidious 3 and Insidious: The Last Key). Overall, this is was a terrifying horror movie with great scares but a bit of a slow beginning.
