Insidious: Chapter 2 ★★☆☆☆

July 11th, 2023

Common Sense Media Age: 15+ Violence 4/5 Language 3/5

My Age Recommendation: 15+ (Due to frequent disturbing imagery and terror, brief sequences of child abuse, and brief strong language).

After watching the first one and being reasonably frightened, I decided to watch the second one to see if I want to continue watching the rest of the series before seeing Insidious: The Red Door in theaters. The story follows the same family as they seem to live a normal life. After the death of Elise, the police are still investigating the family's house, so they are staying with Josh's mom in the meanwhile. Soon, similar scary instances occur around Renai, but what she doesn't see is that Josh is still possessed from his previous trip to The Further. The family must find help with Elise's old friends to stop the evil force who has taken over Josh before it is too late! Can they save Josh? Let me say, this movie had serious potential. The first half of the movie was incredibly scary, so much so that I was wondering if this would be the new scariest movie I had ever seen. The first half included crazy and unexpected jump scares that paired with disturbing imagery that made me jump and even scream a little bit. Unfortunately, the second half of the movie flatlined hard. The story seemed to catch up to the scares in the second half which resulted in a weird and useless plot line and just horrible characters in general. The reveal of the main villain and their origin story was disturbing, but it seemed so pointless and unexplained that it took away the final scare of the film. The story started to rush and thus making no sense towards the second half of the movie, and with this the scares and imagery were reduced significantly. After watching this movie, I have decided that I might just skip to the new one and forget about the third and fourth movie in this series to avoid future disappointment! Overall, this was a terrible movie with the first half being the best part of the entire thing.
