Common Sense Media Age: 17+ Violence 4/5 Sex 5/5 Language 4/5
Drinking/Drugs 3/5
My Age Recommendation: 17+ (Due to brief strong violence, frequent graphic nudity, frequent sex scenes, pervasive strong language throughout, drinking and drug usage involving teens).
I saw this movie on my Netflix October recommendations, and I was skeptical about the plot for a while. I did not think something like this, on paper at least, sounded good. But online reviews called it a 'modern horror masterpiece', and I decided to give it a shot! The story follows a pretty and popular girl named Jay who met a boy and has sex with him. She is drugged after sex and is told later by him that he has passed some sort of curse onto her. An unknown force known as 'it' takes the form of family members or people she knows, and 'it' only walks towards her. This thing does not speak or run or attack until it gets too close, then it will kill you. The only way to stop it from always following you is to have sex with someone else to pass it on. Can Jay outsmart the curse, or will she have to do unthinkable things to buy her more time? Let me say, this movie was good, but not the best for modern horror. The story was well developed which did address my original concern on how the concept of this movie would work, but the execution was a little rough. The beginning was really quick and left little time for the graphic scenes to really settle, thus losing some horror effect. I will say the last half of the movie was pretty intense, including the ending which left me with a sense of dread. Most of the characters were developed well throughout, however two of the main characters were not developed at all and seemed like they were just tagging along the entire movie. The cinematography in this movie was great and added to the scares, especially the use of dizzying yet slow 360 pan shots to capture 'it' coming closer and closer with each spin of the camera, which added to the sense of dread fostered throughout the movie. I did think this movie was riddled with cliches in the dialogue though, that and some characterization issues is the reason I put this at a 3 instead of a 4, but it is definitely worth the watch! Overall, this is a great horror movie with some cliches but definite scares!
