Jumanji: The Next Level ★★★☆☆

December 15th, 2019

Common Sense Media Age: 11+ Violence 3/5 Language 3/5 Sex 2/5.

My age recommendation: 10+ (due to some violence and language, and brief suggestive content).

I first heard about this movie last month on TV when an ad for it appeared. I couldn't believe they were making another Jumanji!!! The first one was great, but I was a little skeptical of this sequel. The plot is basically when Spencer decides his life is not worth it, he seeks to the old Jumanji game to become Dr. Bravestone to try to feel like he can do anything again. When his friends find out he has done this, they immediately jump back into the game in hopes that they can rescue Spencer. What they didn't know is that the game is broken, and not everything is working properly since the game is now fighting back. The game has completely changed, and everyone will have to adapt to survive in this new game. Will they save Jumanji? Let me say, this movie was a disappointment. There was basically no plot, and everything was not explained properly. For instance, when Milo and his former associate meet up again for the first time in 15 years, it is still not explained properly what happened that caused the two to be mad at each other. Another unexplained instance was how did Spencer become a character who wasn't on the original list of characters? I know the game is broken and you cannot choose your character as a result of this, but the only characters were the one's on the avatar screen, and Ming isn't one of them. The only reason why I gave this movie a 3 out of 5 and not a 2 out of 5 was because of the comedy. The comical moments kind of made up for the weak plot. Overall, this is an ok movie with a weak plot but great comedy.
