Common Sense Media Age: 18+ Violence 4/5 Language 3/5
My Age Recommendation: 15+ (Due to some gory violence, disturbing images, brief strong language, and brief sexuality).
I was on Hulu after they put up their October Horror Movie watchlist. I saw they remade the original Hellraiser movie, along with a scarier prequel to the entire Predator series. What I wasn't expecting, was a movie centered around a mirror to be on this list. I knew if it was up with the others, then it had to be good. The story follows Tim and Kaylie, siblings, who are meeting each other for the first time in 11 years. The last time they met, they were running away from their psychotic father who killed their mother after going insane from listening to a mirror. Determined to kill the mirror, grown-up Kaylie and Tim find the mirror at an auction and bring it back to their childhood home, provoking it until it unleashes all of its power. Trying to destroy it, Kaylie and Tim start to see repressed memories that led up to the death of their parents, and they start to question their reality. Can they escape their nightmares? Let me say, this was a great scary movie. The imagery and jump scares with the ghosts made this a truly suspenseful movie, and the ending leaves you with a feeling of dread (when you watch the movie you will understand what I mean). The childhood memories were acted and characterized really well, and it was very scary at times. My only concern was how quick the end was, and I wish it was dragged out just a little bit to increase the suspense leading up to the ending. Overall, this is an amazing horror flick that will leave you terrified.
