Saw X ★★★★☆

TW: THE FOLLOWING MOVIE CONTAINS HEAVY SEQUENCES OF TORTURE, GORE, AND DISMEMBERMENT. VIEWERS DISCRETION ADVISED

Common Sense Media Age: 17+ Violence 5/5 Language 5/5 Drinking/Drugs 3/5

My Age Recommendation: 17+ (Due to strong bloody sequences of torture including dismemberment, extreme intense sequences of violence including gore, pervasive strong language, and brief drug usage).

Anyone who has read my reviews knows I absolutely love the Saw movies. After the disappointment known as Spiral that came out last year, I was really hoping Saw X would redeem themselves and try not to stray away from the point like the previous film did. Opening day, Saw X received a certified fresh score of 86 (highest score any Saw movie so far), and I knew this movie was not going to disappoint! The movie takes place in between the events of Saw 1 and Saw 2, in which John Kramer has been told he has three months to live, but an experimental treatment located in Mexico has the potential to save his life. Once the operation is performed on Kramer, he learns a couple days later that he has been scammed, and they never actually performed surgery on him and took his money and ran, which prompts John to kidnap them one by one with the help of Amanda to put them in a set of elaborate and grisly traps to test their will to live and to teach them a lesson. However, not everything goes according to John's plans, as unexpected visitors and a cunning captive might derail his plans. Can the captives survive their traps, or will they face a brutal demise? Let me say, this was one of the best Saw movies of them all for a few reasons. One, they focus on a story and characterize both John Kramer but a little bit of Amanda as well, and two, the characterization of the victims in the beginning helped the traps feel more symbolic and all-the-more terrifying. I will say the story and the pacing was great in this movie, the dialogue had definitely been upgraded from the last few films (good thing too considering all of these movies are character driven), and the development of John Kramer finally gave Jigsaw time to shine on screen instead of hiding behind a TV screen. Overall, this was a great Saw movie with fun for any Saw fan (including the post-credits scene)!
