Smile ★★★★☆

Common Sense Media Age: 16+ Violence 5/5 Language 4/5

My Age Recommendation: 16+ (Due to strong bloody violence throughout, frequent disturbing imagery, frequent strong language, and frequent jump scares).

I have been dying to watch this movie for a while now, and since it is fall break I decided to go watch this with my younger brother in theatres. I thought this would be like any other horror movie I have seen, but trust me, this one is much scarier. The story follows a psychiatrist named Rose who agrees to see one last patient before her shift ends. This patient ends up claiming an unseen force is changing people's appearances and has told her today is the day she dies. Dismissing these claims as trauma induced hallucinations, Rose tells her everything is fine. Instantly, she becomes violent and a disturbing smile appears on her face before she brutally kills herself. After seeing this, Rose sees the smiles herself. It starts off with random people jump scarring her in her home, but it progresses to family members and even dead people she used to know. She then finally believes going to a cabin where no one is near will prevent her from seeing the smiles since no one is around, but she ends up having to face off with the monster itself that created this curse. Can she get rid of this curse? Let me say, this the second scariest movie I have ever seen. The VHS movies are a tad bit scarier, but this is a close second. These jump scares are different because there is no build-up or misleading, just disturbing imagery whenever the movie feels like it. The smiles and the monster are extremely scary, especially towards the end, and I was shaking in the theater. Some parts of the movie builds up towards a jump scare, and then never scares the audience, which leaves you feeling tense and suspenseful for a while until the next scare, which I think is clever and even more psychological. Overall, this is an extremely scary movie with disturbing imagery, a whole lot of jump scares, and a messed up ending to really make you think!
