Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ★★★★★

June 2nd, 2023

Common Sense Media Age: 9+ Violence 4/5 Language 2/5

My Age Recommendation: 9+ (Due to frequent animated action throughout, mild language, and intense scenes).

I was so excited to see this movie ever since the end credits scene of the first movie in this series (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse). I remember being mesmerized by the art and animation style of the first movie and thinking how Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was probably one of the most visually striking movies I had ever seen, and nothing could top it, and then the sequel came out! The story takes place a year after the first one, and Miles Morales is now a sophomore in high school trying to balance his life in school and as Spider-Man. Gwen has now joined an elite team of Spider people from across the multiverse, and their latest villain The Hole has shown up in Miles' universe, prompting her to reconnect with him. When things go wrong, Miles follows Gwen back to the interdimensional Spider HQ to learn that there are millions of Spider people across the multiverse, and he soon learns more about the villain they are after. Miles learns that the only way to stop the villain is to let one of his close family members die, and this pits him against the Spider People as Miles won't let his family go to save the multiverse. Can Miles redefine what it means to be Spider-Man in order to save the multiverse and his family? Let me say, this is one of the best movies I have ever seen! The animation, and I didn't even think this was possible, was better than the first movie with multiple animation and art styles being showcased within each scene. The story was amazing and captivating, and so were the characters. The plot, despite the film's 140 minute run time, was even throughout and was never rushed nor dragging during the movie. That being said, this movie had more darker moments than the first one, but they felt incredibly real and emotional. The dialogue during the intense scenes helped make the characters feel real and less imaginative, and I could honestly feel what the characters were feeling during the sad sequences. Overall, this is one of the greatest movies ever with every scene being an artistic masterpiece that everyone should enjoy!
