Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem ★★★★★

July 29th, 2023

Common Sense Media Age: 8+ Violence 3/5 Language 2/5

My Age Recommendation: 9+ (Due to strong animation action throughout and some language).

When I heard they were making another TMNT movie, I was a little shocked. The Michael Bay live-action ones were atrocious, and some of the original full-length films from the 90's had a weird and unpleasant animation style, so I was excited to see the new 'comic book' type animation in this movie, and when I got an early screening to watch it, I was amazed on how good it was! The story follows turtles who were transformed into talking mutants after coming into contact with 'ooze' created by a mad scientist named Baxter Stockman. 16 years later, the turtles have learned martial arts and are currently living in the sewers with the occasional trips to the real world for bare necessities, living by the motto that all humans are bad and are not to be trusted. When a mishap occurs and the turtles reveal their identity to a high school student named April O'Neal, her acceptance of them make them want to leave the sewers and stay above ground. When a mysterious mutant villain comes to light, the press and the news cast a hatred against all mutants, thus forcing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to defeat this villain to become a hero in the eyes of the people. Can they defeat the mutant and live a normal life? Let me say, this movie was surprisingly good. The animation was amazing, and I loved the comic book/sketchbook feel the entire movie had. The story was great along with the execution, and the casting for the characters made the movie really good. All of the ninja turtles are voiced by actual teenagers who had a good dynamic in real life, which came through during the movie. This helped with the main themes of the story (acceptance and being yourself) since the characters were naturally bonding through their dialogue. The movie was also surprisingly funny, and I found myself laughing a lot in this movie, despite it being a kids movie. Overall, this is an amazing movie for the whole family, and prepare to laugh and be visually impressed!
