TW: THE FOLLOWING FILM IS UNRATED (NC-17) AND CONTAINS EXTREMELY GRAPHIC SEQUENCES OF GORE AND VIOLENCE. VIEWERS DISCRETION STRONGLY ADVISED
After seeing the first two a little over a year ago, I was beyond excited when I was told in August a Christmas themed Terrifer threequel is on the way. As a fan (not insane) of films like this, I was more than ready to see how they were going to top the infamous 'bedroom' scene of the second film, and they definitely made the movie worse than the second one. The story follows Sienna as she was just released from a mental institution following the events of the second film. She goes to live with her aunt's family and her cousin seems to be very interested in Sienna. Of course, Sienna starts to 'see things' and thinks that Art the Clown is back after five years, and she starts to worry that her current family isn't safe. Art the Clown is of course back, and he is more than ready to finish the job from the second film! I will say, this movie was more bloody and definitely more gruesome than the second one. With a 30 minute shorter run time than the second movie, this one was fast paced and didn't drag on (main complaint from before). The story itself stayed consistent while characterizing the victims more than usual, something that helps with the story more and I wish more horror movies did this. With the second film having a small 250,000 dollar budget, this film was a sizeable upgrade with 2 million, and it was well used for sure. The locations are much more varied and they fixed a lot of editing issues found with the second film. The main question people ask is in relation to the 'bedroom' scene and if this film tops it, and I have to say the new phrase is the 'shower scene' because it had me questioning whether I should've watched the film at all. I love gore and the bedroom scene almost made me look away for the first time, but this new shower scene was a real struggle to watch! All of these gory scenes are still a testament to Damien Leon who always uses practical effects and never uses CGI, hence why all these graphic kill scenes feel realistic even if it's a bit cartoonish. With all those positives, the main negative was shown with the ending. I wish the ending was thought of a little bit better because it could have easily become a 4-star film. I wanted more closure after seeing such ridiculous kills and they ended it in a way so that Terrifier 4 will have room to expand, which I never like these types of endings. Overall, this was still a highly entertaining film that is a must watch with friends, but it's absolutely not for the squeamish!
