The First Purge ★★☆☆☆

June 16th, 2022

TW: THE FOLLOWING MOVIE CONTAINS A BRIEF SCENE OF SEXUAL ASSAULT AND GRAPHIC VIOLENCE. VIEWERS DISCRETION ADVISED.

Common Sense Media Age: 17+ 4/5 Sex 4/5 Language 4/5

Drinking/Drugs 4/5

My Age Recommendation: 17+ (Due to extremely graphic and gory violence throughout, frequent disturbing imagery, strong language throughout, frequent drug usage, two brief sex scenes, and a brief scene of sexual assault).

We are so close to finishing this series with the fourth movie in this franchise! I will admit I was a little disappointed with this one, but it was also the scariest one yet. This movie takes place in 2017, 5 years before the events of the first Purge movie. America is in shambles as racial injustice, riots, violence, and crime rates are at an all time high. The elections are just around the corner and a new party known as the NFFA has started to gain popularity with the people promising to fix America. They pitch the idea of The Purge and congress agrees to let it happen as a voluntary experiment in Staten Island where participants are given 5,000 dollars to stay and more to commit crimes. When this Purge experiment begins, things do not go according to plan, and all hell breaks loose! Let me say, this is a good movie in theory. An origin story of a deadly event was exactly what this series needed. Unfortunately, the flawed plot and flat characters made this movie that had potential totally fail. The plot was rushed throughout and this made the characters flat and undeveloped. The flat characters made the twists and death scenes unemotional since I did not feel close to them at all! This movie was undeniably the scariest one I have seen in this series so far, and unfortunately some of this is because of the cheap jump scares (around 10 or 11) found throughout the movie. Overall, this may not be the strongest story with the best characters, but do expect to be scared!
