The Matrix Resurrections ★★★☆☆

January 5th, 2022

Common Sense Media: 15+ Violence 4/5 Language 3/5

My Age Recommendation: 14+ (Due to strong action violence throughout and brief strong language).

I was extremely excited to hear that there was a new Matrix movie coming out. A year ago when the ads started to flood my YouTube page, I was certain this was going to be an amazing film just like it's predecessors. Not even a week into this movie being released in theatres and on HBO Max, the mixed opinions of film critics started appearing. Some people say this is an amazing movie in the Matrix film and that it really captures what the whole concept of the Matrix is all about. The others claim this is a horrendous movie that was a money grab for die hard Matrix fans and that the new cast of older characters sucked. The story follows right after Matrix Revolutions, when (SPOILER ALERT) Neo and Trinity died to save the Real World and made peace with the machines. But for some reason, Neo, who goes by his Matrix name Thomas Anderson, is still alive! Thomas is a video game designer who made games in the Binary trilogy. The Binary games are based off the visions Thomas has of the first three films, and Thomas starts to question the reality in which he lives in. When he starts seeing things from the first few movies, Morpheus appears, and he must make a decision once again to see the true reality. When he sees the real world and learns his visions were real, he learns this new Matrix is much stronger and harder to defeat than the previous one's, but new allies are here to help him defeat this new code. Will Neo prevail? Let me say, this movie wasn't as bad as some people say, but it is definitely not as good as others would say. The good things in this movie are the character development of the new characters, a semi-decent plot, and stunning visuals. The bad thing about this movie is how confusing it is. Some scenes try to explain how Neo is still alive, and the explanations do not make sense. The main villain (The Analyzer) in its entirety makes zero sense. When he tries to explain why he is a villain, what he did to keep Neo alive, and his role in creating the new Matrix, it just made no sense. When the movie ended, I was left with a lot of questions that not even the internet could answer! But the stunning visuals, decent plot throughout, and amazing character development kept me from giving this a 2 star rating. Overall, this is a decent, not re-watchable Matrix film that will leave you confused.
