Common Sense Media Age: 18+ Violence 4/5 Language 4/5
Sex 2/5
My Age Recommendation: 16+ (Due to hyper-realistic gory violence, some strong language, and a brief sexual scene).
I've been wanting to watch this movie since I was 10. For obvious reasons, my parents would not let me watch this movie when I was that young. I was intrigued by the fact that many said this dystopian movie was scary because it was really realistic and that in the right scenario it could happen in real life. So when I finally got around to watching it, I was shook! The story follows a family who got rich by selling home security systems for those who do not wish to be harmed during The Purge. The Purge is one day a year where all crime is legal for 12 hours, including murder. All police and medical offices are shut down for this period as they say The Purge reduces the crime rate for the human race down to 1 percent. When one of the kids in this family let in someone who has been injured during The Purge, a large group of Purgers request that the man has to be sent out to them, or they will break into the home and kill them all. Realizing that the security systems the family sells are just for show, the family has two choices. Either send the man outside where he will be killed, or let the purgers intrude and have to fight them all? Let me say, this movie was great. The story was good, but it had a few plot holes towards the end. The character development was amazing and it really made you sympathize for them during the pivotal plot moments. The good character development also helped with the twist towards the end, and this made the movie very intense. Speaking of intensity, this movie delivered an amazing story that had me shaking. The movie is set in 2022 (the movie was made in 2012) and the realistic aspects of the concept of purging had me scared to death! The fact that if someone really wanted to, they could recreate this concept is insanely scary. Usually when I watch horror movies, I expect a bad plot and pointless killing with the reassurance that none of it is real. Not only did this movie have a great story, but the concepts and ideas brought up in this movie (society concerns, rich versus poor, media propaganda, humans being violent creatures) had me terrified because I cannot say for certain that this movie is not real. For all I know, hundreds of years in the future humanity might think it is best for us to Purge for one day, which is the scariest thought of all! Overall, this is an amazing movie, but be prepared to start thinking of all the 'What If's' in this movie!
