Totally Killer ★★★★☆

Common Sense Media Age: 15+ Violence 4/5 Language 4/5 Sex 3/5

Drinking/Drugs 4/5

My Age Recommendation: 16+ (Due to some brief bloody/gory violence, pervasive strong language throughout, frequent sexual dialogue, under aged drinking, and drug use).

I heard about this movie after finishing The Boys on Prime Video, and this movie popped up out of nowhere. I went in blind since I hadn't seen a trailer, synopsis, or even a review on this movie, and it was a pretty good horror movie (for the first time this month). The story follows Jamie, a teen in 2023 who lives in a town where 35 years ago, a killer known as the 'Sweet 16 Killer' killed three teenage girls by stabbing them 16 times. Now on Halloween night, Jamie's mom is killed by the Sweet 16 Killer, and Jamie's friend makes a time machine to go back in time on the night of the original murders to catch the killer and save her mom from dying. On the way, she experiences culture shock between the decades with the loose restrictions and excessive bullying, and she must navigate the 80s as a modern teenage girl to find her mom (in high school at this time) to stop the murders. Can she save her mom? Let me say, this movie was awesome. The time machine thing seems bad on paper, but it was executed really well and made for a great plot with good execution. The character development of the 2023 characters was okay (main reason for the docking of a star), but the 1987 characters were characterized really well. I also loved the dialogue throughout the movie, since this is a horror comedy, and the culture shock lines between average 80s behavior clashing with 2023 tropes was hilarious. The pacing was a little fast for me in the beginning, but it became steady 20 minutes in, and this helped with the great ending and the twist too. Overall, this was a great horror comedy for anyone looking for laughs and a few kills!
