Turning Red ★★★★☆

April 9th, 2022

Common Sense Media Age: 10+ Violence 2/5 Language 2/5

My Age Recommendation: 9+ (Due to some cartoon violence and brief mature themes).

I recently saw how this movie has been receiving a lot of negative reviews online, not from Rotten Tomatoes, but from average critics on google and Metacritic. After hearing about how good this movie was from my friends, I decided to watch it and see if this movie really was all that, and I am glad I did! Turning Red follows the story of Meilin Lee, a good student and daughter who always does what is asked of her. One day when she experiences an emotional breakdown after her mother publicly humiliated her indirectly, she turns into a red panda. She quickly learns that being calm changes her back into human form, but she does not like the fact that she could become a panda at any moment! Her parents explain to her how this panda runs in the family, and that a ritual has to be performed during the next red moon that will get rid of the panda. Can Meilin survive until the ritual, or will she let her panda out and cause chaos? Let me say, this was a great, light-hearted, and fun movie to watch. The story and plot was really entertaining, and there was never a dull moment. The movie had great characters that were funny but also well developed, making me root for them towards the end of the film. The pacing of the movie was good too, and nothing was rushed or slow. Overall, this was a great movie for anyone who wants a laugh without compromising a good story line.
